If You Look Up to the Sky received another wonderful accolade! It has won a Gold medal for Children’s Books (7 & Under) from the Independent Publisher Book Awards. I’m both humbled and honored to be among so many incredibly talented authors and look forward to meeting them May 29th in New York City!
In March, I received notification that If You Look Up to the Sky was up for two IBPA Ben Franklin award nominations: Best New Voice in Children’s/YA and Children’s Book 4 to 7. My husband and I flew to Austin, TX last Friday for the ceremony and were beyond excited to bring home the Gold for Best New Voice in Children’s/YA and Silver for Children’s 4 to 7!!!!!
It was such an incredible evening of meeting new authors and seeing my publisher Lily Coyle from Beaver’s Pond Press.
I’m so grateful for having this awesome experience that I will never forget.
If You Look Up to the Sky has been nominated for two 2018 IBPA Ben Franklin Awards!
The first nomination is in the Children’s Book 4 to 7 years old category.
The second is for Best New Voice in Children’s/Young Adult.
I’m so honored that If You Look Up to the Sky has been recognized in both categories, and is included among other incredible titles. I’m looking forward to attending the ceremony in Austin, Texas (I’ve never been!) on April, 6th and meeting all the other authors!
I’m excited to announce that If You Look Up to the Sky received a wonderful review from Publisher’s Weekly!
The review had many lovely descriptions for Margarita’s amazing illustrations, and I was humbled by this particular part:
“Writing with tenderness and warmth, Dalton emphasizes that there is comfort to be found in both the memories of lost loved ones and in the great expanse of the universe.”
I feel so incredibly honored to receive this from such a highly regarded publication. You can read the full review here.
If You Look Up to the Sky received another wonderful and amazing review – this time by @sodrewrites!
“One thing I love about If You Look Up to The Sky is it’s a strong reminder that anything is possible. There’s no need to be fearful or worry about anything, because even the sky itself is a symbol of all the beauty and hope in the world. Storms and rainbows remind us that hard times will come, but they will pass. Stars remind us that each of us is just as special as the single stars that adorn the sky and are just as important.” – So She Writes
I love what she and her family took away from the message, that they love the artwork, and that it is a favorite among all of her kids – even the teenagers.

I’m very excited and honored to share this incredible book review from the amazing children’s book blogger @Hereweeread!
“Just like the ocean, I adore the sky. It’s as if it’s constantly trying to teach me to remain calm whatever the situation may be. That’s the same overall message I took away from this book.” – Here Wee Read

I had my first book signing for If You Look Up to the Sky on November 25, 2017, at the Barnes & Noble in Minnetonka, MN!
As part of a collaboration between B&N and Beaver’s Pond Press, I was invited to be a part of their in-store local author series. It was the perfect way to wrap up a wonderful Thanksgiving trip back to my hometown of Minneapolis.
To say I was nervous would be a serious understatement – terrified is probably more accurate. But the day exceeded my expectations; and, to be surrounded by so many friends, family, and holiday shoppers (I didn’t forget you!) for the entire two hours was humbling.
I also had the opportunity to share the experience with my amazing illustrator, Margarita Sikorskaia.
Thank you again to all who came out. Your love and support mean the world to me and continues to make the success of the book possible.
I’m very excited to announce that the book is finally here and it is beautiful!
I still can’t believe the day is finally here and I’m holding it in my hands. It is a dream come true.
The book is also available to purchase online! You can get your copy from Itasca Distributors. I would love to know what you think of the book so please leave a review.
I’m very excited to announce that the Kickstarter for my first children’s book, If You Look Up to the Sky, launched today!
The story is about a young black girl whose grandmother teaches her that the sky and universe will always offer her love, protection, and guidance should she ever need it. And that it will always be a way for them to connect – no matter what.
The book itself is almost ready for publishing – the story is final, all illustrations are completed, and the book layout files are close to being done. All that is left is printing, and I’m hoping the Kickstarter will help offset some of the costs.
I’m very proud of and excited for this book. I hope that you’ll check out the Kickstarter and consider supporting and sharing the Kickstarter and seeing it to completion.
